USA: Maryland government asks to stop using TikTok for fear of cyberattack

The government of Maryland on Tuesday banned the use of TikTok and other platforms based on China Y Russia in state computer networks, for fear that they pose a cyber threat.

The Republican governor’s move Larry Hogan broke the same day Republican Wisconsin lawmakers asked Democratic Gov. Tony Evers to erase TikTok of all the public devices of the state, including his own, considering it a threat to national security.

Hogan announced the emergency decree to prohibit the use of said platforms, stating that they could be involved in cyber espionagesurveillance of public entities or inappropriate collection of personal information.

According to the decree, state agencies must remove those apps from all state networks and implement measures to prevent the installation of such apps, and place restrictions to prevent their use or access.

In Wisconsin, lawmakers told Evers the popular video app should be removed because it could be used by the Chinese government to spy on users or promote Communist Party propaganda.

“Wisconsinites hope their governor is aware of the dangerous national security threats posed by TikTok and protects them from this avenue for PCC intelligence operations,” reads the letter signed by Senator Ron Johnson and Representatives Mike Gallagher, Tom Tiffany, Glenn Grothman, Bryan Steil and Scott Fitzgerald.

Britt Cudabacka spokeswoman for Evers, said on Twitter: “What I like best about this ‘we want to work together’ attitude from Wisconsin Republicans is that they send out a formal three-page letter, when they could have just called, just so they can leak it to the press and win over stories like this. ”, indicated the official in reference to the article that appeared in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which was the first to report the letter. “Of course they did it in bipartisan spirit!”

A week ago, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, a Republican, banned state employees and contractors from using TikTok on official devices, citing its links to China. The governor of South Carolina, also a Republican, announced a similar ban on Monday.
