Ecuador returns to the mandatory use of a mask in closed spaces due to a rebound in coronavirus cases

Ecuador imposed again this Wednesday the mandatory use of a mask in closed places, after the increase in respiratory diseases, including the coronavirus covid-19. The national Emergency Operations Committee (COE) ordered “mandatory use of the mask for all citizens in closed spaces, poorly ventilated places and where distancing cannot be maintained,” said Juan Zapata, Minister of the Interior, at a press conference. and president of the COE.

The organism also recommended the use of masks in open places where massive events take place, as well as voluntary isolation for five days when there are symptoms of respiratory diseases.

Ecuador had progressively relaxed the restrictive measures due to covid-19, after the cases decreased. Last October, the president William Lasso declared the end of the pandemic in the country, which was one of the first outbreaks of the disease in Latin America.

“The severity of covid infections is low”said the Minister of Health, José Ruales, adding that “we do not observe a significant variation” in the number of deaths.

Nevertheless, The authorities recognized that in the country of 18 million inhabitants, cases of influenza, seasonal flu and covid have increased, especially in children and the elderly.

Also, the EOC ordered the Ministry of Health to prepare contingency plans for the care of respiratory diseases in order to expand the health services for their treatment and guarantee the supply of medicines.

In the country, 84% of the population of age to be vaccinated has received the complete immunization schedule against covid-19.
