OAS Secretary General recognizes Boluarte as president of Peru

The general secretary of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagrocongratulated this Wednesday Dina Boluarte as the new president of Peru, replacing Pedro Castillodismissed by the Congress of the South American country.

”We salute the President of Peru Dina Boluarte and her call for national unity. We reaffirm the support of the OAS for democracy, peace, institutions and the urgent need to rebuild the democratic path; with an inclusive, open, frank and respectful dialogue”, Almagro said on social networks.

Previously, the general secretary of the OAS In an extraordinary session of the Permanent Council, he had rejected the actions taken by Castillo and called for dialogue in Peru.

“What happened today (…) constitutes an alteration of the constitutional order,” sentenced the Uruguayan diplomat.

The OAS sent a high-level mission to Peru in mid-November to analyze the situation in the country, at the request of Castillo, who denounced at that time that a “coup” against him.

In a preliminary report, the mission recommended that Peru initiate a dialogue between the parties, including the Government and the different branches of power, and that a political truce be called to allow the then president to advance his government plan.

Almagro pointed out this Wednesday that the political actors in Peru should have followed the recommendations of the OASwhich he qualified as a “Lost opportunity”.

“This crisis could have been avoided by following the recommendations of the high-level group,” highlighted Almagro.

boluarte swore this Wednesday before the plenary session of Congress as the first president in the history of Peru, after the removal of Castillo, accused of carrying out a coup d’état.

Castillo was arrested after being dismissed after trying to dissolve the Legislature and call a constituent process to avoid a political trial against him.

Castillo’s gesture was labeled a coup d’état by members of his own government and was rejected by the Armed Forces and the Police.
