More than 1,000 New York Times journalists on strike seeking better working conditions

More than 1,000 journalists from The New York Times began a 24-hour strike on Thursday to demand better working conditions, after The NewsGuild of New York union and the newspaper’s management could not reach an agreement.

“We were ready to work for as long as it took to reach a fair deal, but the (media) management team withdrew from the table with five hours to go,” The NewsGuild said in a tweet.

In a note to the newsroom, Joe Kahn, executive editor of The New York Timessaid he was disappointed with the union’s decision.

“Strikes often occur when talks stall. That is not where we are today. Although the company and NewsGuild remain separated on a number of issues, we continue to exchange proposals and move towards an agreement,” Kahn said, in statements published by The New York Times.

NewsGuild also took to social media to urge readers not to read the tabloid or play its hobbies this Thursday, announcing a “picket” at 1:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. GMT).
