“While we hope to honor the Human Rights Day This December 10, I ask once again for the release of the hundreds of political prisoners in Cuba, who remain detained after the protests of July 11, 2021″, said the ruler, according to a statement released by the White House.

On that occasion, thousands of Cubans staged the largest protests against the government in 60 years, which left one dead and dozens injured.

More than 500 protesters are serving sentences, some as long as 25 years, after participating in them. The Catholic bishops of Cuba recently requested amnesty for “a good number” of prisoners next Christmas.

“In the face of oppression, these protesters courageously exercised their fundamental freedoms, including the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly”Biden added.

assured that the United States “defends their human rights” and will continue to advocate for the “liberation of all those who were imprisoned in this brutal repression.”

He blamed government officials “for violence against peaceful protests.”

According to what Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said on Twitter this Friday, yes to the United States “He was concerned about the well-being of Cubans, he would put an end to the economic blockade and faithful compliance with his predecessor’s policy of maximum pressure, which does so much damage to the population, a flagrant, massive and systematic violation of human rights.”

Cuba was recently included by Washington in a list of countries that threaten religious freedom, in its latest measure of pressure against the only ruling Communist Party of the island.

Although he has relaxed some of the provisions of the Trump administration against Cuba, Biden has avoided resuming the policy of the previous Democratic president Barack Obama (2009-2017), of closer rapprochement with Havana.

A new penal code in force since December 1 in Cuba created new crimes related to participation in subversive activities and attacks carried out through information and communication technologies.

This maintains the death penalty for 23 crimes, including against State security, terrorism, international drug trafficking and homicide. The new code was approved after the demonstrations in July 2021.
