Jersey Island: One dead, several missing in apartment building explosion

One person has died and about a dozen are found.”missing“because of a burst produced in a block of flats in the town of St Helier, in the Jerseybelonging to the British crown, the local police reported this Saturday.

Jersey Police Chief Officer Robin Smith said today that around 4 GMT this morning she received notice that a “big explosion” in an apartment block, an incident of which hardly any details are yet knownnor the cause of the event.

“There are, of course, several people who are unknown and a search and rescue operation has been launched.”he pointed.

The Rescue Service and the Fire Department of Jersey, an island located in the English Channel, near the coast of France, collaborate in this operation.

Police said between 20 and 30 people have been evacuated from the affected area, which is cordoned off, and taken to St Helier town hall.
