Saudi Arabia threatens reaction from countries in the region if Iran develops a nuclear weapon

The foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, Faisal bin Farhansaid today that, yes Iran develops a nuclear weapon, the countries of the Persian Gulf region and the Middle East will “react” to ensure their own security.

“I clearly believe that if Iran obtains a functional nuclear weapon, all bets are off.” said the head of Saudi diplomacy in a panel at the World Policy Conference forum in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates.

According to Bin Farhan, the region is “a very dangerous space”, since “significant activity has been seen from Iran” in relation to uranium enrichment and the possible development of nuclear weapons.

”And, of course, the regional states will not want to be exposed to such a threat without reacting. We can expect the regional states, without a doubt, to look at how to guarantee their own security.”the minister pointed out.

He also made reference to the growing political and economic tensions between the United States and China, the two world powers, and assured that “polarization is the last thing we need right now.”

We are already seeing tremendous pressures on the global economy (…) more polarization is not the way to solve that, it’s just the way to exacerbate it. We need to build bridges.”said Bin Farhan, whose country maintains good relations with the two powers but has recently become closer to China.

In this sense, he recalled that Saudi Arabia this year became the fifteenth largest economy in the world and the one that is growing the fastest, and vindicated the role of Riyadh and the Gulf Cooperation Council (CCG) as “a bridge between East and West” for “address all these challenges that we face.”

On the latest OPEC+ decision to reduce oil pumping, the Saudi minister said it was a measure “completely justified” since “Oil has remained relatively stable, compared to other energy sources, including renewables.”

“The price has to be fair for consumers and providers, because without a fair price for providers, providers will stop investing,” assured.
