Iran jails 400 people for participating in protests

The Tehran courts 400 people were sentenced to prison terms of up to ten years for their participation in the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini almost three months ago, the Iranian justice system announced on Tuesday.

Iran it faces demonstrations considered “riots” by the authorities.

The death in custody on September 16 of this 22-year-old Iranian Kurdishafter his arrest for violating the dress code of the Islamic Republic, sparked an unprecedented protest movement in the country in recent years.

“During hearings on the rioters in Tehran province, 160 people were sentenced to terms ranging from five to 10 years in prison, 80 people to terms of two to five years, and 160 people to terms of up to two years,” said the chief justice in TehranAli Alghasi-Mehr, quoted by Mizan Onlinethe agency of the judiciary.

The execution in recent days of two 23-year-olds in connection with the protests has sparked a wave of international condemnation.

Since the beginning of the movement, thousands of people have been arrested. The highest security body Iran said on December 3 that more than 200 people had been killed during the protests.
