China vs India: new border tensions between the most populous countries in the world

A new confrontation on the diffuse border between China and India. It has just been learned that, last Friday the 9th, troops from both nations fought in the LAC (Line of Real Control) with a balance of “several wounded soldiers”.

According to New Delhithe Indian side replied “resolutely” to the intrusion of the Chinese military and that, finally, both withdrew from the area.

In this regard, the internationalist Enrique Banús remember that these two gigantic nations have been fighting for that “border strip that is located more than four thousand meters” above sea level. Specifically, Infobae explains, the dispute is “through various regions of the Himalayas”: Beijing claims the Arunachal Pradeshcontrolled by New Delhiwhich in turn claims the Aksai Chinadministered by the neighboring country”.

And since they do not agree on the layout of a border, their solution was to create a dividing line (LAC). Banús points out: “On each side, there are troops, but they do not carry firearms, a decision that was made together after some clashes caused deaths”.

The measure is important because this type of clashes between the two states are frequent. The last grave dates back to June 2020. So, Infobae says, “At least 20 Indian soldiers were killed and 76 wounded, while Beijing acknowledged four dead and one seriously wounded.”.

Banús points out that the information that comes from that disputed area is partial. There are no journalists there and you must trust the official version of the countries. The point is that, up to now, China has not declared about the mishap.

If one takes into account that both nations are world powers and possessors of nuclear weapons – and that they account for a large part of the world’s population-, could this dispute eventually escalate? The specialist considers that, with the little information that is handled, everything indicates that it is not. “If it were a region with significant resources, I would understand, but it is not. In any case, it could pass for a matter of national pride”.

Or as he would say correspondent of the BBC in Beijing, Martin Patience: “There is more and more rivalry between the two nations that dispute regional influence” -which according to Bloomberg would be expressed in the Belt and Road InitiativeChina’s strategy to recover the Silk Road and which has already meant large investments in Pakistan and India-, which can generate more situations of tension like this.

In any case, Banús puts the magnifying glass on the version of India, which denounced that China crossed the LAC. Why did the Xi Jinping government make that decision? There are two options. The first is that it was a fluke, an unintentional action. The second: “It can also be a way that China he wants to distract from what is lived inside his country. Let’s not forget that, after raising the Covid Zero policy In response to protests, infections skyrocketed”. They can no longer boast, therefore, of their great management of the coronavirus pandemic.
