Life imprisonment for the thief who killed a British tourist at the door of a hotel in Argentina

A court in Buenos Aires sentenced a Venezuelan to life imprisonment for the murder, in front of one of the most exclusive hotels in the city, of British tourist Matthew Charles Gibbard in December 2019, legal sources reported on Tuesday.

The Oral Criminal and Correctional Court 17 also sentenced six other people -and acquitted three- with between two and a half and four years in prison for joining, together with the author of the homicidean “illicit association” whose purpose was rob people entering the country through the Ezeiza International Airport.

The ‘modus operandi’ included that they “marked” these tourists and followed them to their destination.

The court ordered that the sentences be communicated to the National Directorate of Migrations, since the law establishes that those who receive a sentence of more than three years in prison cannot remain in the country, and also established the confiscation of automobiles and motorcycles used in crimes.

He displayed a weapon before them and demanded that they hand over their bags and watches. Faced with the resistance of both, he shot Gibbard to death and severely injured Zone, who took six months to walk again.

Films show the monitoring of the victims and the way in which the attempted robbery and the shooting occurred, as well as the two cars that were left “as support” in the middle of the robbery.
