Petro says that Castillo has been “captured” and questions the American Convention on Human Rights

The president of Colombiathe leftist Gustavo Petroquestioned this Wednesday the effectiveness of the American Convention on Human Rights in the face of the “crisis in Peru”, after the dismissal and “capture” of the former president Pedro Castillo.

“The crisis in Peru, the arrest, without a judge and without defense, of a popularly elected president has seriously questioned the role of the American Convention in the Latin American legal system”claimed Petro on Twitter, in a new message of support for Castle.

The leftist leader has been detained for seven days at a police base accused of rebellion and conspiracy, after a failed attempt to dissolve Congress that ended with his fall from power.

Also known as the Pact of San José, The American Convention is a treaty approved in 1969 by the Organization of American States (OAS), that ensures compliance with human rights and freedoms among member countries.

In the midst of a wave of protests that left seven dead and hundreds injured, some left-wing governments in Latin America sided with Castillo.

Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and Bolivia closed ranks in favor of the former leader and assured on Monday in a statement that “since the day of his election, he was the victim of undemocratic harassment, in violation (…) of the American Convention on Human Rights” .

Hundreds of demonstrations demand early elections and the release of the former president.

Castillo, a 53-year-old rural teacher, lasted just a year and a half in power, in the midst of a prolonged political crisis.
