Mehdi Mohamad Karami may become the third Iranian to be executed on charges linked to the protests which began on September 16 after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after being arrested in Tehran by the morality police, who accused her of violating the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code.

According to Amnesty International, the young man is part of a group of five people sentenced for an attack that cost the life of a paramilitary during a funeral ceremony for a protester in Karaj, near Tehran.

“I respectfully ask the judiciary, I implore you, please (…) annul the death penalty in the case of my son”, declared Mehdi Mohamad’s father, Mashallah Karami, in a video posted on social networks, where he appears with his wife.

In the video he describes his son as a “karate champion” who has won several competitions at the national level and is a member of the country team.

Mehdi Mohamad Karami was sentenced less than a week after “the start of a hasty and unfair trial which is nothing like a valid judicial process”, denounced Amnesty International.

Mashallah Karami told local media that the family lawyer did not have access to the file and that the court-appointed attorney did not respond to his multiple calls.

Iran has already executed two people linked to the protests, Mohsen Shekari on December 8 and Majidreza Rahnavard on the 12th of this month. The last convict was executed in public.

Since the middle of September about 14,000 people have been arrested in IranAccording to the UN and the Oslo-based NGO Iran Human Rights (IHR), an estimated 469 protesters have been killed.
