The foreign minister of Mexico describes the expulsion of his ambassador in Peru as “unfounded and reprehensible”

In a message from his official Twitter account, the Secretary of Foreign Relations of the Government of Mexico defended that the conduct of the Mexican diplomat “has been attached to the law and to the principle of non-intervention.”

“Pablo Monroy, ambassador in Lima, informs me that the Government of Peru has given him 72 hours to leave the country. I find that decision unfounded and reprehensible. This Tuesday, the Peruvian government declared Monroy persona non grata and gave him 72 hours to leave the Andean country.

This in response to the “interference” that they consider that the Mexican “high authorities” have done.

“I report that the Government of Peru has declared the Mexican ambassador in Peru, Pablo Monroy, persona non grata, due to the repeated expressions of the highest authorities of that country (…) which constitute interference in our internal affairs and are in violation of the principle of non-intervention,” Peruvian Foreign Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi said in a statement.

Since last Thursday, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry conveyed its rejection of Monroy, considering the expressions of the Mexican authorities as “interference in internal affairs”, after the former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo tried to carry out a self-coup and requested asylum in Mexico.

“The expressions of the Mexican authorities constitute an interference in the internal affairs of Peru and are not consistent with the events that have occurred in recent days.

This Tuesday, Mexico confirmed that it gave political asylum to Lilia Paredes, wife of former President Castillo, and her children, who received safe-conduct on the same day from the Peruvian Foreign Ministry to leave the country for Mexico.
