Scruff, the dog who collected more than a thousand plastic bottles on his daily walks

She is 13 years old, loves to go for a walk every day, but also to play with plastic bottles that she collects and then delivers to their owners. This is Scruff, a border collie nicknamed the “ecological dog”, who has impressed his neighbors by joining the care of the environment. He so far he has collected over a thousand in the city of Nuneaton, Warks, in England. This is his story that quickly went viral.

What started as a playful prank has turned into something positive, revealed David Grant, 48, and his wife Yvonne Faulkner-Grant, 47, who They found an opportunity to encourage recycling. So they began to carry a bag to store them and then leave them in an improvised collection center in their home.

Collecting bottles on their walks

Scruff takes two walks a day: a long one in the morning that is usually 6 kilometers and then one at night of only 1 km. During the route he stops to play with the bottles and since it was a repetitive attitude, his owners decided to do something positive with it. A day he catches four or five and only in November he collected 104.

“We felt guilty leaving them on the ground (…) People might think that we had dropped them ourselves”added David Grant who explained that “there is a lot” of garbage during his walks and that only his mascot can pick them up and not them so that it is actually “the bottle patrol of scruff”.

The “ecological dog” went viral

Noticing the large number of bottles he collected scruff decided to follow up and shares a monthly report on Grant’s Facebook page using the hashtag #scruffsbottlepatrol. From there they began to document all the walks with photos.

In January he began collecting 40 bottles during and has already accumulated more than 1,000. “We are currently storing them at the side of the shed in the garden for a big count at the end of the year.”

“Someone told me the other day that not all heroes have a cape and that’s exactly what I think Scruff is doing: being a hero (…) We think he’s setting an example for everyone that we should start taking care of our planet (…) “If a dog can do it, anyone can”, added the happy owners of this 100% ecologist pet.
