‘No more than a trick’: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle slam The Sun’s apology for Jeremy Clarkson’s column

The Dukes of Sussex, the prince harry Y Meghan Marklehave criticized the tabloid’s apology British The Sun for a column by television presenter Jeremy Clarkson and have described it as “no more than a public relations stunt.”

The column, in which Clarkson said she hated Markle “with every cell,” sparked more than 20,000 complaints before the regulatory body for the press in the United Kingdom and numerous convictions of public figures, including parliamentarians.

A spokesman for the couple accused the sun to profit from and exploit “hate, violence and misogyny”.

“A real apology would be a change in their coverage and ethical standards for everyone.”

“Unfortunately, we are not holding our breath.”

The spokesperson called Clarkson’s comments “dangerous” and added:

“The fact that the sun not reaching out to the Duchess of Sussex to apologize shows his intentions. This is nothing more than a public relations stunt.”

“Repentance”

On Friday, the newspaper said it regretted running the column and was “sincerely sorry”.

The news outlet indicated that the columnists’ opinions were their own, but, as a publishing entity, “with freedom of expression comes responsibility.”

The text became the article with the most complaints filed with the Independent Press Standards Organization (Ipso).

Clarkson asked that it be removed from the newspaper’s website.

Ipso said it had received more than 17,500 complaints as of 09:00 GMT on Tuesday, rising to 20,800 as of 17:00.

Instead of the column, the website of the sun now has a copy of a message Clarkson posted on Twitter, in which he said he was “appalled at having caused so much pain” and that “I would be more careful in the future”.

Clarkson’s column, published on December 16, was heavily criticized on social media with her daughter, Emily, saying she was against everything her father had written about the duchess.

Kevin Lygo, head of media and entertainment for Britain’s ITV television channel, described the comments made by Clarkson as “appalling” but said there were no plans to replace him as host of the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

Column

The column was published after the premiere of the six-part Netflix documentary about Prince Harry and his wife, in which the couple discussed their relationship with the UK media.

In the column, Clarkson wrote:

“At night, I can’t sleep as I lie there, gnashing my teeth and dreaming of the day when she (Markle) will be paraded naked through the streets of every town in Britain, while the crowds yell ‘Shame on you! ‘ and they throw piles of excrement at him.”

“Everybody my age thinks the same way,” he added.

“But what makes me desperate is that younger people, especially girls, think that she is cool. They think she was a prisoner at Buckingham Palace, forced to talk only about embroidery and kittens.

In his Twitter post following the criticism, Clarkson said he had made an “awkward” reference to a scene from “Game of Thrones” that “fell badly with many people”.

In another part of the text, the presenter compared his hatred towards Markle with the one he feels against the first minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, or the serial killer Rose West.

In response, Sturgeon said Clarkson’s comments about Markle were “deeply misogynistic and just awful.”
