Putin expresses his condolences to the Vatican for the death of Benedict XVI

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putintoday expressed his condolences to the Vatican on the death of the pope emeritus Benedict XVIas reported by the Kremlin.

“Benedict XVI was an outstanding religious and statesman, a staunch defender of traditional Christian values,” the Russian president asserted in a telegram sent to Pope Francis, quoted by the Russian Presidency.

Putin recalled that during the pontificate of the Holy Father, “full diplomatic relations were established between Russia and the Vatican, and relations between the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches developed.”

“I had the opportunity to talk with this exceptional person and I will always keep the best memories of him. I would like to convey my sincere condolences at this hour of grief,” Putin added.

Kirill, the patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, highlighted for his part in his message of condolences to Pope Francis “the unquestionable prestige of Benedict XVI as an outstanding theologian” who promoted “the development of inter-Christian cooperation” and “the defense of values traditional morals.

According to a Russian Orthodox hierarch, during the pontificate of Benedict XVI, relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church were strengthened “in the spirit of fraternal cooperation.”
