Lula affirms that those responsible for the “genocide” of the pandemic will be punished

The new president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvapromised this Sunday that those responsible for the “genocide” caused by the covid-19 pandemic in Brazil, where almost 695,000 people died, will not go unpunished.

In his first speech, before Parliament, Lula affirmed that “in no other country, the number of fatalities was so high proportionally to the population.”

“The responsibilities for this genocide must be investigated and must not go unpunished,” said Lula, who directly criticized the “criminal attitude of a denialist government” led by the far-right Jair Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro denied the seriousness of the pandemic and led a discredit campaign against vaccination, which has contributed to the country’s continuing low immunization rates against covid.

The inauguration ceremony is being held under strict security measures, due to threats from the most radical Bolsonaro activists who demanded a military coup to keep the far-right leader in power.

Delegations from fifty countries and the entire diplomatic corps accredited to the country are present in Parliament.

Among the attendees are the King of Spain, Felipe IV, and the presidents of Argentina, Alberto Fernández; Bolivia, Luis Arce; Colombia, Gustavo Petro; Chile, Gabriel Boric; Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benitez; Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou; Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa; and Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The official ceremonies will conclude with a reception that Lula will offer to the foreign delegations at the Itamaraty Palace, seat of the Foreign Ministry, next to the Parliament and Government headquarters.
