The president of the Venezuelan Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, attended today the act of inauguration of Lula on behalf of the Venezuelan Government, after the new president of Brazil announced that he would restore diplomatic relations, broken four years ago, with the Caribbean country.

As part of this announcement, last Friday, the Brazilian government annulled a decree that prevented Maduro and other Venezuelan officials from entering the country.

The ban on both Maduro and a hundred government officials from entering the country had been issued by the outgoing president, the far-right Jair Bolsonaro, who since 2019 has recognized the opposition Juan Guaidó as the “legitimate president” of Venezuela.

Lula, who maintained a very close friendship with the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez and who has similar ties to Maduro, had already announced that, once he took office, he would restore relations with Venezuela at all levels.

During his inauguration ceremony, in a massive ceremony, the Brazilian president reinforced his firm commitment to combat inequalities of all kinds that divide the population and “delay” the development of his country.
