“Ken was a visionary, a pioneer and an icon,” one of the companies he founded, the clothing brand Hoonigan, said in a statement on Instagram. “But most of all he was a father and a husband. He will be sorely missed.”

The popularity he achieved with his Gymkhana YouTube series surpassed any of his sporting achievements, with millions of people watching him achieve drive at high speed through circuits full of obstacles and dangerous challenges.

He appeared twice on the BBC show Top Gear and starred in four EA Sports racing games.

“His videos shaped my personality and my interest in cars,” acknowledged Nascar driver of Mexican descent Ryan Vargas.
