United States: 6-year-old boy was arrested after opening fire at school

A six-year-old boy opened fire Friday in the classroom of an elementary school in the state of Virginiaseriously injuring a teacher, and is in police custody, police said.

No students were injured in the incident that occurred at the Richneck Elementary School from the coastal city of Newport News, in the East of USA.

“The individual is a student of six years. He is currently in police custody.”local police chief Steve Drew said at a press conference, adding that “it was not an accidental shooting.”

Police reported that the victim was a teacher in her 30s. years whose injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

“I am shocked and heartbroken”said the superintendent of schools of the city, George Parker. “We need the support of the community to make sure that guns are out of the reach of young people.”

School shootings rage USAwith recent tragedies such as the killing last May of 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, at the hands of an 18-year-old gunman years.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, last year there were USA about 44,000 firearm-related deaths fireof which approximately half were cases of murder, accidents and self-defense, and the other half suicides.
