Petro calls for an urgent meeting of the OAS before an attempted “coup” against Lula in Brazil

The Colombian President, Gustavo Petrorequested this Sunday an urgent meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) to address the attempted “coup” in Brazilwhere followers of former president Jair Bolsonario invaded the headquarters of Parliament, the Presidency and the Supreme Court in Brasilia.

“All my solidarity to Lula and to the town of Brazil. Fascism decides to strike. The rights have not been able to maintain the pact of non-violence. It is urgent time for an OAS meeting, if it wants to continue to live as an institution and apply the Democratic Charter.”said Petro in a message posted on Twitter.

The Colombian president added that he proposed that “the Inter-American Human Rights System should be strengthened by applying current regulations and expanding the charter to women’s, environmental and collective rights.”

Nevertheless, Petro pointed out that the response to this proposal is “parliamentary coups or violent coups from the extreme right”, also referring to what happened on December 7 in Peru when the then president, Pedro Castillo, was dismissed by Congress after attempting a coup d’état.
