War in Ukraine: Warsaw asked Berlin for consent to supply Leopard tanks to Kyiv

Poland’s defense minister announced on Tuesday that he had asked Germany for permission to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine, where Russian forces continue to claim progress on the ground.

“Germany has already received our request to accept the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine,” Minister Mariusz Blaszczak wrote on Twitter, also calling on Berlin to join the “coalition of countries supporting Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks.”

Earlier, Poland said it was ready to supply Kyiv with 14 of these German-made tanks as part of an international coalition, but faced hesitation from Berlin.

Warsaw says it is in talks with about fifteen states about this coalition, many European armies with such armored vehicles are likely to have a significant impact in the conflict in Ukraine against the roller of Russian troops.

“We need (…) several hundred” tanks, Andriy Yermak, chief of staff of the President of Ukraine, said at a time when the Russians are on the offensive, in particular in eastern Ukraine. The day before, the leader of the local occupying power, appointed by Moscow, said that the Russian army was advancing on two settlements in the Zaporozhye region, also in the south, where clashes with the people of Kiev broke out this week.

On Monday evening, the headquarters of the Ukrainian army soberly reported that “on January 20 and 21, the enemy conducted offensive operations in the area” in the Maly Shcherbakov area.
