Ukraine: Five Governors and Four Deputy Ministers Removed After Corruption Scandal

Five regional governors and four vice ministers were removed from their posts in Ukraine over an alleged corruption scandal in the army, in the midst of the Russian invasion of the country, the government announced on Tuesday.

The governors of the Dnipropetrovsk region (center), Valentin Reznichenko, will leave their posts; the Zaporizhia region (south), Oleksandr Starukh; the Sumy region (north), Dmytro Zhivytsky; the Kherson region (south), Yaroslav Yanushevich, and the capital kyiv, Oleksiy Kuleba, said Taras Melnychuk, government representative in Parliament.

In November, several outlets accused Reznichenko of awarding tens of millions of euros worth of road repair contracts to a group co-founded by his girlfriend, who works as a fitness trainer.

Reznichenko and the governors of the Sumy, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions are under judicial investigation, while Kuleba’s dismissal is related to his upcoming appointment to the presidential administration, according to press reports.

The government also dismissed Deputy Defense Minister Viacheslav Shapovalov – whose resignation had already been announced early on Tuesday – and Social Policy Minister Vitalii Muzychenko, as well as two Deputy Ministers for Territorial Development, Ivan Lukeria and Viacheslav Negoda.

Also dismissed were Anatoly Ivankevich and Viktor Vychniov, both deputy directors of the Maritime and River Transport Service of Ukraine.

These dismissals and resignations follow reports in the press about inflated prices in a contract to supply food to the Ukrainian army, the first corruption scandal to break out in the defense ministry since the war began.
