DIRECT. War in Ukraine: German Chancellor must give permission for the supply of Leopard tanks

The most important

  • After being under pressure for days, Germany should finally deliver Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Kyiv said, two German media outlets reported Tuesday evening. Chancellor Olaf Scholz could give the green light this Wednesday, Spiegel said.
  • For its part, the United States could agree to the supply of Abrams tanks, writes the Wall Street Journal.
  • Several high-ranking Ukrainian officials have announced their resignations following media exposure of alleged cases of corruption.
  • The European Union announced on Monday that it is allocating an additional 500 million euros for the supply of weapons to Kyiv and allocates 45 million euros for the training of the Ukrainian military in the EU.

US tanks will become the new “blatant provocation”

“If American tanks are sent to Ukraine, they will be destroyed, like the rest of NATO equipment,” said Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov. In his opinion, if Washington decides to send tanks to Ukraine, “it will be impossible to substantiate defensive weapons with the argument.” Rather, in his eyes it would be another blatant provocation against Russia,” he says in an interview transcribed on the embassy’s Facebook page.

Germany to supply Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks, two media outlets report

Chancellor Olaf Scholz is to give the go-ahead for the dispatch of German Leopard 2 type 2A6 tanks on Wednesday, the Spiegel website says without citing the source. This is “at least one company” or at least ten heavy tanks, the media adds. The NTV news channel, which cites sources close to the government, also indicates that the German chancellor, who has been pressured for weeks to give his consent, is preparing to announce the move. The German leader, who is due to address the lower house of the German parliament at 13:00, will also give his approval to countries, including Poland, that wish to supply Kyiv with Leopard 2 tanks, the media reported.
