USA: Congressmen seek to classify Wagner mercenaries as terrorists

A group of legislators from the House of Representatives presented this Wednesday a bill in the Congress of USA that seeks to classify the group of Russian mercenaries Wagner as a terrorist organization.

If approved by both Houses, the proposal would order the State Department to include Wagner in its list of terrorist organizations within a period of no more than 90 days, among which groups such as Al Qaeda Y boko haram.

“The Wagner Group is made up of ruthless mercenaries and terrorists who kill indiscriminately and do the bidding of (Vladimir) Putin.said the congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazarone of the promoters of the bill.

The congressmen mention the participation of mercenaries from the Wagner group in massacres, torture and rape in Ukraine and in the Central African Republic last year as reasons for putting them on the terrorist list.

The entities, companies or individuals that give “material support or resources” groups classified as terrorists by the US may face criminal charges, according to the State Department.

Last Friday, the White House sanctioned the wagner group and called it a “transnational criminal organization”.

The US estimates that this group has some 50,000 troops deployed in Ukraine, of which 10,000 would be contractors and 40,000 ex-convicts.
