A parakeet saved her family’s life by making ‘strange’ noises ahead of Turkey’s devastating earthquake.
Mavis had been bought just three months before the tragedy.
The Cimen family had enjoyed her company at their home in Pazarcik, but noticed that she rarely sang and was quieter than other parakeets.
But Mavis started running around the house making “strange” noises at dawn on Feb. 6.
When the 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit the area, the family was able to flee their home.
Mustafa Cimen, 17, told the state-run Anadolu News Agency: “Half an hour before the earthquake, it made a strange noise at night when the lights were not on.
He flapped his wings and jumped from place to place in his cage.
“Thanks to the bird, we didn’t fall asleep because of the earthquake.”
Mavis was allowed out of her cage and was friendly to people, her family said.
The bird has been seen by residents as a mascot in the makeshift shelter where Mustafa takes refuge.
He told Anadolu that the dogs the family was feeding in front of their house were also making “strange noises” before the quake.
The tragedy destroyed thousands of homes and claimed more than 44,000 lives in Turkey and Syria.
The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria has passed 45,000 amid anger over corrupt construction practices.
It has become the worst modern disaster for both countries and the death toll is expected to rise.
Christian Atsu’s agent has confirmed that the footballer was found dead 12 days after the earthquake in Turkey after an extensive search.
The 31-year-old, who played for Hatayspor, was in his ninth-floor apartment when two devastating earthquakes struck, killing at least 45,000 people in Turkey and Syria.
Soon after, there were reports that Atsu had been rescued from the rubble, although it soon transpired that this was not the case.
The search for the former Chelsea and Newcastle player has continued. A pair of his shoes were found a few days ago and now his agent Nana Sechere has confirmed that his body has been recovered.
Turkey has promised to investigate anyone suspected of building collapses and has ordered the arrest of 100 suspects.
But neither Turkey nor Syria have confirmed how many people are still missing after the earthquake.
