“No one is attacking Russia. Russia is the aggressor, Ukraine is the victim of aggression.”assured Stoltenberg in a statement to the press together with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, and the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmitro Kuleba.

The three politicians met today at the Atlantic Alliance headquarters on the same day that Putin delivered a state of the nation address to both houses of Parliament, his first since April 2021, in which he accused the West of wanting to deal Russia a “strategic defeat” in the Ukraine and end it “once and for all”.

For Stoltenberg, “It is President Putin who has started this war of imperial conquest” and “It is Putin who continues to escalate the war.”

“One year after the Russian invasion, we see no sign that President Putin is preparing for peace. On the contrary, as he has made clear today, he is preparing for more war.”stressed the Norwegian politician.

Stoltenberg insisted that the Russian president “is preparing for more offensives, is mobilizing more troops and sending more weapons.”

“This is exactly why we need to speed up our support for Ukraine, because it will be a tragedy for Ukrainians but also dangerous for all of us if Putin wins in Ukraine.”he asserted.

“This is a war of choice, it is a war of aggression. Russia has decided to invade neighboring Ukraine and, of course, Ukraine has the right to defend itself.”he concluded.

Stoltenberg also stated that NATO “is increasingly concerned” that China “may be planning to provide lethal support” to Russia, and considered that this step would be “Dangerous for our own safety and for the whole world.”

Kuleba, for his part, said that “Everything that China has done and will continue to do in the context of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, if we put political rhetoric aside and look at actions, should focus on upholding the principle of territorial integrity.”

Borrell affirmed that, despite the fact that China assures that it does not provide weapons to countries at war as part of its foreign policy, “we must remain vigilant”.

Stoltenberg pointed out that “We must make it clear that the future of Ukraine is within the Euro-Atlantic family,” and pointed out that when the war ends it will be necessary to create long-term provisions for Ukrainian security, in order to guarantee that Russia “does not continue to undermine European security” and to “break the cycle of Russian aggressions”.

“So NATO will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes and we will continue to work closely with the European Union for that.”indicated.
