The motion, defended by the centrist Charles de Courson, obtained 278 votes out of the 287 he needed to bring down the Executive of Élisabeth Borne and the pension reform promoted by the president, Emmanuel Macron.

This is the fifteenth motion of no confidence against the current French Executive, appointed less than a year ago in a National Assembly in which he does not have an absolute majority, and the one that has received the most support.

Until now, the opposition had achieved a maximum of 239 votes against the government, in a motion in October 2022 that brought together the forces of the entire left and the extreme right.

They have now been joined by the independent centrists, some regionalists and, above all, two dozen deputies from the traditional right, who broke the slogan of their leadership.

The French Executive faces in the next few minutes the vote of a second motion of no confidence, presented by the extreme right, which will only foreseeably receive the 89 votes of Marine Le Pen’s party.

The two motions of censure were presented after last Thursday the Government decided to approve the pension reform through a constitutional mechanism that allows it to do so without the vote of the chambers, in exchange for submitting to the motion of censure.
