According to the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile, the epicenter of the telluric movement took place 122 kilometers east of Socaire, in the Antofagasta Region, and reached a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 240 kilometers.

The tremor was felt in the regions of Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá, Antofagasta and Atacama, detailed the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred).

Senapred also reported that this is the fourth telluric movement registered this day in the area.

For its part, the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA) indicated that “the characteristics of the earthquake do not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami” on the coasts of Chile.

Chile is located in the southeastern part of the Pacific ring of fire, the most seismic zone in the world, and suffers hundreds of small tremors due to the subduction of the Nazca plate under the South American plate.

In 1960, the southern Chilean region of Valdivia suffered the most powerful earthquake recorded in modern times, measuring 9.6 on the Richter scale, killing 1,655 people.
