Tensions flared as crowds flocked to access the Diego Maradona stadium

England fans have spoken of ‘Farcian’ scenes outside the Diego Maradona stadium ahead of tonight’s game.

The Three Lions will meet Italy in a Euro 2024 qualifier between the two countries.

The video, posted to Twitter, shows huge crowds marching against police with batons and riot gear.

Some raised their hands as tensions rose.

Broadcaster Faye Carruthers wrote on Twitter: “I’ve spoken to a lot of England fans who came to the game (and those who still aren’t) who say it was a joke to come here. I have friends who spent 90 minutes on a bus (it’s a 25 minute ride drive ) – the bus was traveling in the opposite direction of the stadium…”

She added: “They probably won’t be knocked out – just with the standings.

“A fan said that the English police outside were ’embarrassed’ because nothing was going to happen organizationally.”

In tonight’s game, Harry Kane is crowned England’s all-time top goalscorer, breaking Wayne Rooney’s record.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker had scored 53 goals for the Three Lions before the trip to Napoli as Gareth Southgate’s side began their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

It was Kane’s first appearance in an England shirt since December at the World Cup against France, as he scored a penalty in a heartbreaking quarter-final, but missed another.

The 29-year-old has been level with Rooney ever since, but has now claimed the record – ironically from 12 yards.

Meanwhile, the FA has condemned the actions of an England fan who brought a flag to Italy with a “deeply offensive” message to the late Diego Maradona.

As is often the case for away games in England, there were concerns about fan problems before the game.

The FA has condemned a supporter who brought an England flag to Naples reading ‘Diegos in a box’ – a nod to Argentine and Neapolitan legend Maradona, who died in November 2020.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the actions of the person who traveled to Naples with a flag carrying a deeply offensive message,” the ministry said in a statement.

“We have taken immediate steps to have their tickets canceled for the match. The matter will be looked at further when we return to England.’
