Biden conveyed to Netanyahu his concern about judicial reform

The president of USA, Joe Bidenhas conveyed its concern to the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, about your proposal judicial reformwhich has plunged Israel into a crisis.

One of the White House National Security Council spokesmen, John Kirbysaid in a virtual press conference that these concerns on the part of Biden come from the idea that there must be “checks and balances” and a support fromconsensus” in democratic systems.

Kirby indicated that US officials have been in contact with Israeli officials in the past two weeks.

Asked if there are fears in Washington that the protests in Israel lead to a civil war, he assured that Biden is not worried that the situation will lead to a contest of this type.

“The president believes that one of the big points about Israel is its strong history of democracy And that tradition is being seen in many ways, even as we have concerns about that pending legislation.”the spokesman said.

On Sunday, the White House urged Israel’s leaders to find an agreement “as soon as possible” to find a way out of the crisis.

More than 100,000 Israelis gathered today in front of the Knesset (Parliament) in Jerusalem to protest against the controversial judicial reform promoted by the Netanyahu government, in the framework of a historic general strike that could lead the president to stop the legislative procedures.

The controversial reform seeks to grant more power to the Executive to the detriment of Justice, whose independence would be profoundly undermined.
