They started the fire as a form of protest, says AMLO

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador assured that the fire was caused by a protest by migrants when they found out they would be deported and “they did not imagine that this was going to cause this terrible misfortune.”

At the beginning of his press conference, the head of the federal Executive indicated that there are already elements of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to “proceed legally” and detailed Most of the deceased migrants are of Central American and Venezuelan origin.

“I want to report something very unfortunate, very sad: last night around 9:30 p.m. there was a fire in a migrant shelter on the border, in Juarez City, and so far we have a report that 38 migrants lost their lives. This had to do with a protest that they started, we suppose, after they found out that they were going to be deported, mobilized, and as a protest at the door of the shelter, they put up mats and set fire to them and they did not imagine that this was going to cause this terrible misfortune,” AMLO said.

“The director of Migration (Francisco Garduño) is there, of course all the authorities involved in these events and of course the Attorney General’s Office to proceed legally,” he reported.
