“The return of His Holiness to Casa Santa Marta (his residence) is scheduled for tomorrow, in light of the results of the latest checks carried out this morning”Bruni said.

Francisco86 years old, has spent his second night in the Gemelli hospital in Rome because of bronchitis and his intention is to be present at the Holy Week events, even if he does not celebrate them.

Yesterday afternoon he had a “good time” in the apartment for the exclusive use of the pontiffs in the Gemelli, with “a normal clinical evolution”, and had pizza for dinner with those who take care of him these days while he was admitted, Bruni explained in a brief statement. .

With him were the doctors, nurses, assistants and security personnel of the Vatican Gendarmerie.

This morning, after his second night hospitalized and as he did the day before, he had breakfast, read some newspapers and continued with his work from the hospital.

The night has passed”serenely” for the Argentine pontiff.

The Holy See reported yesterday that he has been diagnosed with a bronchitis of an infectious basis -until then it was a “respiratory infection”- and that he is receiving intravenous infusion of antibiotics.

The therapy has produced “the expected effects with a notable improvement in their state of health”indicated the Vatican spokesman.

For this reason, last night there was talk in the Vatican statement that Francis was expecting a medical discharge “in the next few days” and it will foreseeably take place tomorrow, Saturday.

While awaiting his release from the hospital, the Vatican is busy organizing the many masses and rites of Holy Week in the world center of Catholicism with the pope, the head of the Church, still convalescing.

The Holy See for the moment has not specified the plans for the Holy Week of the pontiff, but the media assure that Francisco will not officiate masses, such as that of Palm Sunday or that of Resurrection Sunday, although he will witness them, being replaced by cardinals. on the altar.

Something that had not happened since 2005, when John Paul II, a few months before his death, was unable to officiate at the Easter liturgical acts.

The cardinal and dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re, assured the media that Francis will “preside” over the Easter rites, which will be officiated at the altar by various cardinals.

For example, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri will be in charge of the Palm Sunday mass, the day after tomorrow, to officially open the Holy Week celebrations, although Francisco will be present, if his state of health does not change.

However, according to the media, the Argentine pontiff will give the blessing “Urbi et Orbi” and will read his traditional and expected message from the central loggia of the Basilica of San Pedro on Easter Sunday.

It is the second time that Francisco has been admitted to this Roman hospital, after he underwent colon surgery on July 4, 2021 and remained hospitalized for ten days, during which he came to officiate at the Angelus from the balcony of the health center.

Since then, the Pope has only suffered a problem in his right knee that forces him to walk with a cane or a wheelchair and has assured on several occasions that he does not want to undergo surgery.
