Spain “encouraged” Xi Jinping to speak with Zelensky to learn about his peace plan

The head of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, He assured today at a press conference that he “encouraged” the Chinese leader, Xi Jinpingto “have a talk” with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyto “know your peace plan”.

Sánchez met this Friday in Beijing with Xi, who has not spoken with the Ukrainian leader since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, and conveyed “his concern” about the “Putin’s illegal aggression on Ukraine”.

Before the meeting with the Chinese leader, the President of the Spanish Government had been in contact with Ursula von der Leyenpresident of the European Commission, who will visit China next week together with the French president, Emmanuel Macron.

Beyond pointing out on the social network Twitter that he held a “heartfelt exchange” with the leader of the Asian giant, Sánchez did not provide details about what Xi said in the conversation and insisted that in Spain and the European Union there is a “unity regarding the defense of the UN charter” and the “respect for the sovereignty of Ukraine, a country that is under attack.”

Sánchez stressed during his conversation with Xi that it must be Ukraine “who decides on their issues.”

He also referred to the recent document of take position published by the Chinese government: “We believe that there are some important points and I recognize the effort of the Chinese authorities regarding the total rejection of the use of nuclear force (…) and their respect for territorial integrity.”

The leader of the Spanish Executive emphasized that Spain is assisting Ukraine “Not only in terms of warfare but also economically and humanitarianly” and explained that it is “the fifth country in terms of hosting Ukrainian refugees.”
