An 89-year-old man, the oldest male surfer in the world according to Guinness World Records, has vowed to surf the waves until he is 100.

Seiichi Sano from Yokohama, Japan climbed Mount Fiji at 80, but that wasn’t enough to quench his thirst for adventure.

Although he had no surfing experience, he tried it that same year and was hooked.

On July 8, 2022, the entrepreneur was recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest male surfer in the world.

Seiichi has no plans to give up his new hobby anytime soon.

“I think it would be interesting to try surfing until I’m 100,” he said.

“I don’t consider myself an old man. I never considered myself an old person. I always feel like I can go on. I still can. I can still enjoy it.”

Seiichi said setting long-term goals and focusing on his physical activity has allowed him to take better care of himself.

“Even now I take better care of myself than before,” he said.

Seiichi spends most of his weekends traveling from his hometown of Yokohama to the beach in Enoshima.

He uses surfing as a stress reliever from his job and does stretches before entering the water.

Seiichi mocked surfing almost two years ago during the postponed Tokyo Olympics.

“I was hoping to attend the Tokyo Olympics, not as a competitor but as an elderly protester,” he said.

He added: “People often say surfing is life itself. If I can describe it in one word, I think it really applies to me at the moment.’
