Ukraine’s defense minister confirms counteroffensive against Russian attackers

Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov confirmed Thursday that his country’s army is preparing for a counteroffensive against the Russian attackers, which includes training troops and evaluating how to “provide the military material that comes from our allies”.

Reznikov made these statements in an appearance before the press after meeting with his Greek counterpart, Nikos Panagiotopoulosin Athens, where he is visiting while Russian forces are in Ukraine They have gone on the offensive in Donbas and are trying to control the city of Bakhmut “completely”.

Although according to the Greek media the purpose of Reznikov’s visit to Athens was to request more military aid from the Hellenic government, neither of the two ministers referred to this point during their appearance before the press.

Reznikov limited himself to thanking Panayotópulos for the military equipment already sent. Before this meeting Greece had made it clear that he was not going to deliver Leopard tanks to Kiev, since the country needs them for its defense strategy.

At the end of 2022, Greece sent 40 Soviet-built BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine as part of a rotating agreement with Germany, which in turn sent 40 Marder-type tanks to the Hellenic nation.

Reznikov pointed out that his country aspires to continue cooperating closely with Greece even after the war and stressed that this country could help Ukraine to develop “its naval capacity”, given its great experience in navigation and maritime.

For his part, Panayotopulos recalled that Greece has joined all the sanctions against Russia “despite the cost to the Hellenic economy”, and once again unequivocally condemned the “cruel war” unleashed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
