“Crime and delinquency are clear that their main adversary is a Chili united, that’s why they are constantly trying to divide us, let’s not fall into that game”said Boric in a message to the Nation accompanied by his ministers, all dressed in mourning.

The policeman’s funeral brought together the majority of those who were presidents since Chile regained democracy in 1990. The ex-presidents Ricardo Lagos (2000-2006); Michelle Bachelet (2006-2010; 2014-2018); sebastian pinera (2010-2014; 2018-2022) and BoricThey attended Mass together.

The third murder of a police officer in 23 days coincided with the enactment by Boric of a law that grants more power to agents and that generated great controversy.

It also motivated the advancement of a plan to eradicate violence from the streets and the announcement of an additional investment in security of 1,500 million dollars a year.

“The easy trigger, as the government says, is for criminals and for people who really work behind a uniform there is no support”complained Isabel Jorquera, a 45-year-old administrator.

To the debate about the increase in crime, the main concern of Chileans, has been added the discussion about immigration without papers, awakening a climate of xenophobia, particularly towards the Venezuelan community, today the largest in the country.

The Prosecutor’s Office publicly identified two young Venezuelans as “persons of interest” in the investigation for the police crime and the photos of their faces circulated on social networks and television.

“Foreigners who do not carry their national identity card and who are detained, preventive detention will be requested”said the national prosecutor Angel Valencia in press conference.
