Israel to Deploy Army Troops to Streets After Tel Aviv Attack

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallantannounced today that the Army will contribute “resources and troops” to the activities of the Police in the cities, after yesterday’s attack in Tel Aviv which left an Italian tourist dead and seven injured.

“Having completed an assessment of the operational situation tonight, Defense Minister, Yoav Gallantinstructed the Defense establishment to allocate resources and troops from the Israel Defense Forces to contribute to the activities of the Israel Police.” a ministry spokeswoman said in a statement, which specified that the number of troops will be determined by members of the security apparatus.

Gallant also decided to extend until Wednesday night the closure of access to Israeli territory for Palestinians from the occupied West Bank and to prohibit access by Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.

The closure also includes the cancellation of the civil measures that were approved before Ramadan and the entry of workers to Israelannounced Defense, referring to the relaxation of entry requirements to Israel for Palestinians from the occupied territories on the occasion of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

This announcement comes after several days of tension between Israelis and Palestiniansincluding two deadly attacks this Friday that left three people dead.

The first of these took place on a highway in the north of west bank occupied, where, according to the Police, at least one Palestinian fired at the vehicle in which three Israeli women were traveling, killing two of them and seriously injuring a third.

Shortly thereafter, an Arab citizen of Israel ran over a group of tourists on a seafront in Tel Aviv. A 36-year-old Italian tourist died at the scene and seven other people were injured.

After the attack in Tel Aviv, the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahusummoned reserve units of the Border Police to deploy as reinforcements.

These episodes occurred shortly after a heavy exchange of fire between the israeli army and Palestinian militias in the Gaza Strip and the south of Lebanonsparked by clashes early Wednesday between Israeli policemen and Palestinian worshipers at the mosque Al Aqsa Jerusalem is occupied.
