US senators back Lasso, who faces impeachment in Ecuador

A delegation of members of the Senate from USA on Monday showed his support for the president of Ecuador, William Lassobefore the impeachment process that he faces in the National Assembly (Parliament), where the opposition accuses the president of an alleged crime of embezzlement (embezzlement).

The entourage, headed by Republican Senator Bob Menendezpresident of the US Senate International Relations Committee, was received at the Government Palace by Lasso and his Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gustavo Manrique.

Menéndez was accompanied on his visit to Quito the also senators Tim Kaine and Tony Cardenasboth of Democratic Party.

In a message on social networks, Lasso indicated that in their meeting they agreed on “the importance of protecting democracy and the stability of the Ecuador”, in reference to the process that can lead to his censure as head of state, when he has not yet completed half of his term.

For his part, Foreign Minister Manrique stressed that both parties agreed to “the importance of fighting drug trafficking”, specifying that “Organized crime affects democracy and puts the stability of countries at risk”.
