European Union sanctions the Wagner group for the war in Ukraine

The Council (the countries) of the European Union decided this Thursday to add the Russian group of mercenaries Wagner and the RIA FAN news agency to the black list of those sanctioned for actions that “undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine”.

The decision to add Wagner, led by Dimitriy Utkin and financed by Yevgeniy Prigozhin, to the list of entities subject to restrictions in connection with Russia’s war against Ukraine, “underlines the international dimension and seriousness of the group’s activities, as well as its destabilizing impact on the countries in which it operates,” the Council said in a statement.

The Wagner group, which is already subject to EU restrictions under the Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime, is a Russia-based private military entity established in 2014, which is “actively involved in the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.” and led attacks on the Ukrainian cities of Soledar and Bakhmut,” the Council added.

As for the RIA FAN agency, the Twenty-seven stressed that it is part of the Patriot Media Group, a Russian media organization whose board of directors is also headed by Prigozhin, and “is involved in pro-government propaganda and disinformation about Russia’s war of aggression.” against Ukraine.

Taken together, the EU restrictive measures regarding actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine now apply to a total of 1,473 individuals and 207 entities.

Designees are subject to an asset freeze and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from making funds available to them.

In the conclusions of the summit of heads of state and government on March 23, the EU reiterated its firm condemnation of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which constitutes a clear violation of the United Nations Charter, and recalled its unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and its inherent right of self-defence.

The Council reiterated that Russia must halt its aggression and immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its military forces and proxies from the entire territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.

The EU stressed that it supports Ukraine “firmly and fully” and will continue to provide “strong political, economic, military, financial and humanitarian support” to the country “for as long as necessary”.
