At least 16 people died Saturday in a fire in a residential building in Dubaiin a popular area of this rich Gulf emirate, the authorities reported this Sunday.
The fire broke out on the fourth floor of a building Al Rasan old area of the city where many foreign workers live.

Firefighters arrived at the scenesix minutes after being alerted”, indicated the Civil defense in a statement sent to AFP on Sunday.
“Preliminary investigations show that the fire was caused by a failure to comply with the safety and security requirements of the building”, he added.
The nationality of the victims was not disclosed.
Dubai, one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirateshas a population of about 3.3 million inhabitants, of which almost 90% are foreigners.
“The competent authorities are carrying out a thorough investigation to provide a detailed report on the causes of the accident.”, the statement states.

The city has suffered spectacular fires in the past, which have caused extensive damage but few casualties.
In 2017, the authorities announced stricter building regulations to minimize the risk of fire, attributed in many cases to the easily flammable materials used for the exterior cladding of buildings.
