Colombia: five people died after a lightning strike on a soccer field

At least 5 people died and 14 more were injured by lightning strikes in a rural area of ​​the municipality of El Tambo, in the department of Cauca, in Colombialocal authorities reported this Sunday.

The Mayor of El Tambo regretted what happened in the corregimiento (town) of Quilcacé and said that among the fatalities there is a minor.

The mayor of El Tambo, Carlos Vela, told local media that lightning struck when a part of the victims were gathered in a bingo and the others played soccer.

The Colombian newspaper El Tiempo indicated that the deceased were identified as Ismael Edilver López Carvajal (43), Jorge Meneses Reyes (33), José Anuar Chito Llanté (28), Wilder Flor Peñafiel and a minor under 16 years of age.

The event occurred last Saturday, April 15, in the village of Loma Larga, Quilcacé sector, when the community was participating in a soccer championship. At that moment a heavy downpour began with electric shock. People tried to take refuge in a tree, but the lightning that caused the tragedy struck.
