US calls for release of Kara-Murza and 400 other political prisoners in Russia

USA condemned this Monday the sentence of 25 years against the opponent and Russian journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza and called for the release of the 400 political prisoners in the country.

Through a statement from the Department of State signed by the spokesman Vedant Patel, USA points to kara murza is “Another target of the growing campaign of repression of the Russian government.

“We renew our appeal for the release of the Mr Kara-Murzaas well as the release of more than 400 political prisoners in Russia”, points out the text that reaffirms solidarity with “all the brave defenders of a better future for Russia who are unfairly detained.” among them Alexey Navalny and Ilya Yashin.

He Moscow Urgent Court sentenced this Monday the opponent and journalist to 25 years in prison -as requested by the Prosecutor’s Office- for a crime of high treason, dissemination of information “false” on the actions of the Russian Army in Ukraine and cooperation with an NGO declared undesirable by the Russian Justice.

In addition, he was fined 400,000 rubles (about $5,000) and prohibited him from practicing journalism for seven years.

The lawyers of Kara-Murza -who had been in preventive detention for a year and a half- have announced that they will appeal the sentence.
