Putin invites Lula to participate in the Saint Petersburg Economic Forum

The Russian President, Vladimir Putininvited his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvato participate in the next edition of the Economic Forum of St. Petersburgin June, official sources reported on Monday.

Putin conveyed the invitation to him through a letter personally delivered to Lula by the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrovwho today paid an official visit to Brazilwithin a tour of several countries of Latin America.

The Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieiratold journalists that they will study the invitation, but that, for the moment, they do not know if the president will be able to attend the event.

Lula, 77, received Lavrov on Monday for a “courtesy visit”, after the Russian minister held an official meeting with his Brazilian counterpart.

According to Vieira, Lula and Lavrov “they did not enter into matters of war”, alluding to the Russian military invasion in Ukraineand if “in matters of peace”, amid the efforts of the president to find a “negotiated solution” to the conflict, which has been going on since February 24, 2022.

Brazil has maintained a position of neutrality since the outbreak of the war and has rejected the imposition of sanctions imposed on the Government of Russia by the Western powers.

Brazil wants to promote peace and is ready to discuss with a group of countries or join a group of countries that are willing to talk about peace.Vieira explained.

Lavrov’s visit to Brazil came days after some controversial statements by Lula during his trip to China and United Arab Emirates in which he stated that the US should stop “encourage“the war and”start talking about peace”, as well as the European Union, and insisted on pointing them out for being “contributing” for the continuity of the contest.
