Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office investigates suicide of one of those detained for corruption

The Public Ministry (MP, Prosecutor’s Office) of Venezuela will investigate the suicide of Leoner Azuaje Urreaone of the 61 people that the authorities have arrested in recent weeks, including several officials, for allegedly being involved in corruption schemes, the attorney general said Thursday, Tarek William Saab.

On his Twitter account, he reported the appointment of two prosecutors to “investigate the unfortunate suicide of the citizen Leoner Azuaje Urrea in his place of confinement”, which he did not specify.

Saab furthermore instructed the Criminal Unit of the MP to which, together with the Scientific, Criminal and Forensic Investigation Corps (Cicpc), forward the “technical inspection, interviews and (the) autopsy”.

Azuaje Urrea was detained by officials of the National Anti-Corruption Police for his alleged involvement in acts of corruption in the state cartons from Venezuelawhere he held the position of president.

At dawn on Wednesday, he was presented before a special court on anti-terrorism and corruption matters, together with the former executive vice president of the state-owned PDVSA Ysmel Serrano and another man identified as Salem Hassoun Atrachboth also accused of this type of illegal practices in the plot related to the oil company.

After the death of Azuaje Urrea, the Prosecutor’s Office computes 60 detainees in the framework of the fight against corruption, led by the president Nicolas Madurowho recently ordered to punish “exemplary“To all the officials involved in these cases, including judges, a former governor and directors of pdvsa.

Although on Tuesday night the prosecutor reported, via Twitter, a total of 80 detainees, the following day he deleted the publication without further explanation and put up a new one in which he reduced the number of people arrested in the anti-corruption operation to 61, between those that included Azuaje.

These actions, according to the prosecutor, are undertaken to punish “mafias” in the framework of the operation, which has resulted in the resignation of the Minister of Oil, Tareck El-Aissamias well as the lifting of the immunity of the pro-government deputy Hugbel Roa and the capture of the alleged partner of Alex Saab, Alvaro Pulido Vargas.
