“At the same time that my government condemns the violation of the territorial integrity of Ukrainedefends a negotiated political solution to the conflict”declared Lula to journalists in Lisbonafter meeting with his Portuguese counterpart, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

“We urgently need a group of countries sits down to negotiate both with Ukraine as with Russia to seek peaceLula stressed.

Brazil does not want to participate in the war Brazil wants to build peacehe added.

rabelo marked differences with the posture of his host.

“President Lula considers that the path towards a just and lasting peace implies prioritizing the path of negotiation”, but Portugal “holds that an eventual path to peace presupposes the prior right of Ukraine to react to the invasion, recovering what it can or wants to recover (…) of its territorial integrity”he claimed.

And that’s because “a matter of principle, which is not to benefit the invader”he stressed.

Lulawho ruled Brazil from 2003 to 2010, he has proposed since he returned to power in January to give international prominence to Brazilafter the relative diplomatic isolation that marked the management of his far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022).

In a delicate game of tightrope walking, the icon of the Latin American left traveled in February to USAwhere he met with the president Joe Bidenand this month he went to Chinafirst commercial partner of Brazil.

But in that game he seemed to stumble, when after meeting with the Chinese president, Xi Jinpingurged the United States to stop “encourage war” in Ukraine and asked the European Union (EU), an ally of kyiv“begin to talk about peace”.

The United States was quick to accuse Lula of “echoing Russian and Chinese propaganda, disregarding the facts.”

“If you don’t talk about peace, you contribute to war”Lula said this Saturday in Lisbon, the first leg of a European mini-tour that will also take him to Spain.
