India: Eleven dead leave gas leak in the north of the country

At least eleven people died, including two children, due to a gas leak from a factory in a town in the north of the Indiareported this Sunday the authorities, who are trying to contain the damage in the area.

The accident took place in the area of Giaspuraa densely populated locality in the city of Ludhianafrom the northern state of Punjabwhich houses several factories and residential areas.

So far there is11 confirmed deaths, most likely caused by gas contamination (…) It is very likely that some chemical may have reacted with the methane in the sewers”, said in a statement to the press the deputy commissioner of Ludhiana, Surabhi Malik.

The dead are five women, six men, and two children, ages 10 and 13., according to the authorities. Four other people who were found unconscious are being treated at a hospital.

According to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the affected area has been cordoned off and a 50-member rescue team was rushed to the scene, along with doctors, an ambulance and a fire brigade.

Relief forces use drones to survey the area to make sure no injured or unconscious people are left.

Landslides, fires and other industrial accidents occur with some frequency in La Indiaoften due to the precarious state of the infrastructure and the lack of maintenance, factors fueled by corruption and illegal practices in the construction sector.
