Zelensky came to Vatican at 4:10 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. GMT) from the palace chigiseat of the Italian Government, where he met with the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloniafter being previously received also by the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella.

It is the first meeting of the pope with the Ukrainian president since the war began, although both know each other because Francis received in audience Zelensky on February 8, 2020, when it was already discussed “of the humanitarian situation and the search for peace” in the context “of the conflict that, since 2014, plagues Ukraine”.

This new meeting comes amid the Vatican peace mission announced by the pontiff on the return flight from his recent trip to Hungary and of which the details are not yet known, although a Vatican source has indicated to the Russian media that the meeting “not directly related” with her and what Zelensky requested the meeting with Francisco “just a few days ago.”

In addition, it occurs when an imminent Ukrainian counter-offensive is expected with which kyiv it wants to reconquer a large part of the territory occupied by Moscow.

The meeting has raised great expectations, since many hope that it will be a starting point to promote complex negotiations, beginning with the humanitarian issue, but which can also reach the field of the cessation of hostilities, given the equidistant position that Francisco he has always tried to maintain, although sometimes that attitude has annoyed the Ukrainians.

The Pope received on April 27 the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhalwho reiterated the invitation to visit that country, a trip on which Francisco He has always answered that he would do it when he could also go to Moscow.

Today’s meeting between Francisco and Zelensky It is particular, because although it appears on the official agenda of the Pope, it is not a state visit like those usually carried out by the presidents of other countries, with which it is unknown what type of information the Holy See at the end of it.
