DeSantis signs bill eliminating racial diversity studies at Florida universities

the governor of Floridathe republican Ron DeSantissigned a bill on Monday that eliminates funds for studies on racial diversity, equity and inclusion in public universities in this state for “promote”, says the regulations, “a dangerous political and social activism”.

The Governor signed the bill sb 266which intends to finish the teaching of the courses known as IED (acronym in English for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion), in addition to another two also on education, in the New College of Floridain Sarasotaa university where a new conservative-leaning board of directors was formed earlier this year.

“If you look at the way this has been implemented across the country, DEI is seen as standing up for discrimination, exclusion, indoctrination, and that has no place in our public institutions.”, said DeSantis, who is expected at any moment to make official his intention to run for the US Presidency as the candidate of the Republican Party.

“In reality, DEI is trying to impose orthodoxy and this has been used as a front to push an ideological agenda, and that is wrong.”, the governor deepened in a press conference at the university, in which the new board, elected with the consent of DeSantis, eliminated these courses and fired the dean of these programs.

The rule stipulates that state universities review any teaching subject “based on theories that racism, sexism and systemic privilege are inherent in the institutions of the USA and were created to maintain social, political and economic inequalities”.

DeSantis signed two other legislative initiatives this Monday, which, like the previous one, were approved in the last session of Parliament, and which, among other aspects, prohibit Florida universities from requiring students, professors or staff to sign and give their support to courses about DEI or other “ideological agendas”.

The president of the Democratic Party from Florida, Nikki Friedpointed out this Monday that the rules are the first steps towards “destroy academic freedom and freedom of thought, just as the dictators of oppressive regimes around the world have done for generations”, and that this is causing the flight out of the state of students, academics and administrators.

“Banning ideas you don’t like, rewriting history to leave out the pieces that don’t fit your distorted worldview, intimidating educators and dismantling academic careers, and banning anything DEI — these are all steps we’ve seen taken in places like Cuba, Venezuela and Russia”Fried said in a statement.

Democratic Congresswoman Anna Eskamanithe first representative of Iranian origin in the Florida Legislature, recalled that SB 266 is based on another rule enacted last year that has been blocked by a federal judge, a blocking that has been upheld by an appeals court.

“This is a destructive law that targets diverse students like me and our ability to thrive in institutions of higher learning. It also suppresses academic freedom and inserts conservative political orthodoxy into the classroom. Further politicizes higher education and reduces freedom of expression”, pointed out the legislator on her social networks.

According to the local Sarasota Herald-Tribune, a group of university students protested outside where the three laws were signed.
