War in Ukraine: CIA urges Russians to provide it with intelligence

“Is this the life I dreamed of? Is this the path I chose? “. It is with these questions that the CIA video begins, which was first broadcast on Telegram this Monday evening, and then on Twitter, YouTube or Instagram. The goal: to try to talk to the Russians in their native language in order to encourage them to join the services of American intelligence.

In the pictures, the father and mother are taken at home and then at work, in a profession that seems to be connected with the state. A woman then appears in her car, checking the CIA contact form on her mobile phone. “Thanks to my actions, we will live with dignity,” the voice-over assures. “I don’t believe in revolution, but in subtle changes taking place in people’s souls,” the narrator continues. “To be a hero is to stand up (…). This will always be my Russia. I will resist,” he said again.

The war in Ukraine has created a unique opportunity to recruit new Russian spies, the CIA told CNN. The idea behind this video, in particular, is to gather information from people who don’t necessarily know they have potentially useful information. In particular, Russians working in the field of cybersecurity, technology, finance … “We need people in all areas of the economy, we need to know what is happening in this country,” James Olson, the former head of counterintelligence, told American television.

The FBI also wants

“There have been contacts” since the start of the war in Ukraine, the CIA official added, adding that the agency would not have released the video if it had not already had some success with the Russians. According to CNN, the FBI also tried to recruit spies among people who regularly cross the US border with Russian territory.

According to a CIA official who gave an anonymous interview to CNN, the idea behind the ad is also to “demystify” the agency’s recruitment process.

Despite the current period of instability, the CIA assured the channel that this was not about recruiting spies as part of the war in Ukraine, which is not mentioned, but about obtaining information on timeless topics.
